The Carpenter's Kids

Holy Trinity is Providing for the Education
of 50 AIDS Orphans in Chitelela Parish, Tanzania

KidsCarpenter’s Kids and Lenten Discipline at the
Church of the Holy Trinity

$70 doesn’t go very far in New York City. Yet that’s all it costs to ensure the education of an AIDS orphan in Tanzania for an entire year, through the Carpenter’s Kids program. Your donation of $70.00—$5.83 per month—pays for the required school uniform, soap, socks, shoes, school supplies and books, and breakfast every school day—for the whole year! Expenses the Tanzanian public school system can’t cover.

By providing these items, we enable children, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to have a primary school education. Most AIDS orphans are cared for within large extended families of neighbors or relatives, who cannot afford to send them to school. For some children, the daily breakfast is their only guaranteed meal.

During Lent, many of us seek to reorient our internal compasses toward God through penitential practices. We fast, we “give up” various luxuries, such as alcohol, meat, desserts, dining out, or take-out coffee. One parishioner gave up ordering take-out food once a week for Lent and found that she could support a child for a year with the money saved! Please pair your practices of Lenten self-denial with almsgiving to Carpenter’s Kids.

Make checks payable ($70 per child) to Church of the Holy Trinity, with Carpenter’s Kids on the subject line and drop it in the collection plate or at the parish office. Please feel free to speak to Susan Valdés-Dapena or Yvonne O’Neal if you have any questions. Asante Sana (thank you)!

On Sun., Feb. 24th, Adult Christian Ed. after the 10:30 service, will focus on Carpenter’s Kids.

Carpenter’s Kids was created by the Rt. Rev. Catherine Roskam, former Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of New York, and the Rt. Rev. Mdimi Mhogolo, Bishop of Central Tanganyika, to better the lives of 2.5 million AIDS orphans in Tanzania. The dioceses pay for administrative costs, so all of the monies you donate go directly to the children.

Holy Trinity invites you to help fulfill the parish's commitment by pledging to sponsor a child. You can support a child in 2013 with an immediate financial gift. To make a pledge to support a Carpenter’s Kid, please email the parish office. Thank you!
