Join us in Draesel Hall for a viewing of the documentary about the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray (1910–1985), who was an American civil rights activist, lawyer, author, and the first African American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest (1977). Added to the Episcopal Church's Calendar of Saints in 2012, she is celebrated on July 1 for her advocacy of human rights, social justice, and pioneering legal work. Overlooked by history, Pauli Murray was a legal trailblazer whose ideas influenced Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s fight for gender equality and Thurgood Marshall’s civil rights arguments. This is a portrait of their impact as a non-binary Black luminary: lawyer, activist, poet, and priest who transformed our world. The film is free of charge, but feel free to bring extra refreshments to share (before, during, and after the film).
