The Episcopal Church, as well as the broader Anglican tradition, sometimes uses the "three-legged stool" metaphor of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason to describe its approach to theology and authority. Though the “legs of the stool” are not necessarily of the same length (the various aspects not necessarily divided into perfect thirds), the analogy suggests that a balanced and stable platform for faith is created when these three legs uphold and critique each other. The concept is rooted in the work of the 16th-century theologian Richard Hooker and highlights the Anglican commitment to engaging with modern challenges while remaining faithful to the Christian tradition. Join Father Beddingfield as we discuss each of these concepts on three Sunday mornings in September.
